Thank you, Mr. Pawlak, for answering my letter precisely as I expected someone in this audience to answer: “Well heck, let’s just blame those greedy, evil doctors for malpractice!” Honestly, I have seldom met more dedicated and concerned human beings than doctors, and I include doctors worldwide for that matter! As for your gratuitous reference to Katrina, at least Louisiana now has a governor who will be decisive like Schwarzenegger in California: Emergency first response is a local and state responsibility – sorry, not Bush’s fault! Regarding how great socialized medicine is, I have recently spent many weeks in Europe this year and have heard some good things but many bad things about health care from the very people who live there. Apparently many Americans fail to grasp that health care is not a right granted in the U.S. Constitution. And if we change our form of government to conform to some people’s ideal of compassion, why stop at health care? Why not give everyone a house? And a car? And free savings? And free education through college? Why not just remove all incentives for excellence and give everything free? Why is compassion redefined as the forced redistribution of income? Why are politicians so intent on being so generous with other people’s money?
