For the first time in its brief history, the Los Alamos Middle School cross country team hosted a race.
The race, held Sept. 14, was run on the team’s home course, just east of LAMS’ campus.
The Hawks dominated their home meet, sweeping the boys and girls seventh and eighth grade titles. Also competing in the meet were teams from West Las Vegas, Pojoaque and Española.
The LAMS eighth grade girls swept the top seven places in their race. Sophia Galvez topped all runners with her time of 12 minutes, 20 seconds, while Katie Stockton, Madison Foley, Talia Dreicer and Nicola Vasquez helped complete the perfect score.
John Rees and Connor Bailey of LAMS took the top two places in the eighth grade boys race, finishing within three seconds of each other. LAMS finished with 27 points, while Española was second with 36 points.
The Hawk seventh grade girls finished with 21 points, half the total of runner-up Pojoaque. Zoe Challacombe, Maria Sandoval and Katie Delgado swept the top three places in that race, while Lily Johnson and Ann Sherrill also cracked the top 10.
JT Taylor had a 25-second victory over runner-up Dominic Roybal of Pojoaque in the seventh grade boys race. In that race, the Hawks finished with just 23 points.
“We are very excited to see the hard work and dedication of those young athletes producing some amazing results,” LAMS coach Jesse Taylor said.
LAMS’ teams have gone undefeated this season, also picking up team titles at Pecos, Española and Las Vegas. LAMS’ eighth grade girls have earned perfect scores at every meet of the season to date.
The Hawks’ final meet of the season is Wednesday when they travel to Albuquerque Academy.
