Gymnastics: Tumblers heading to state meet

A dozen level 4-6 gymnastics from Los Alamos will head to the state compulsory meet starting Friday.

The Atomic City Tumblers will send their 12 qualifying gymnasts to the compulsory state championships being held in Belen. The meet will continue through the weekend.

Among the team’s qualifiers are, at level 4, Katrina Vinyard, Dominique Lucero, Ramya Stevens and Sally Grindstaff.

At level 5, Carley Stillwell, Kaelan Prime, Rachel Martineau and Luvina Lucero are all scheduled to compete for Los Alamos. Katya Skurikhin, Megan Kuzmac, Claire Garnett and Rebecca Runnels qualified for level 6 competition.

To be invited to state, level 4 gymnasts need three all-around scores of 31 or better during the regular season, while level 5 and 6 gymnasts need to earn three scores of 32 or better in all-around competition.

The state compulsories run through Sunday in Belen.

Grindstaff, 12, will start her state appearance Friday evening while Vinyard, Lucero and Stevens will compete in the two afternoon sessions Saturday.

Stillwell, at level 5, will compete Saturday morning. Luvina Lucero and Martineau will go Saturday evening and Stillwell will start her competition Sunday morning. Prime will have to wait until Sunday afternoon.

In the level 6 competition, Skurikhin and Kuzmack are also scheduled for Sunday afternoon, while Garnett and Runnels compete Sunday evening.
