Gymnast Hayley Schake was the top level 7 scorer at the New Mexico State Optional Championships, leading a good showing by several local residents.

The Optional Championships were held March 20 in Albuquerque. In all, 47 gymnasts took part in the event.

Schake, who competes for Zia Gymnastics in Santa Fe, finished the competition with an all-around score of 37.625, the best of any level 7 competitors.

Schake won the 13-year-old state championship, winning three disciplines and finishing second in the other. Schake won the vault (9.60), uneven parallel bars (9.45) and balance beam (9.375) as well as taking second in floor exercises (9.20).

Zia teammate and Los Alamos resident Danielle Parsons was the second-place finisher in the 14-and-over division. Parsons’ all-around score of 36.30, combined with Schake’s, helped propel Zia to a team state championship.

Parsons was the state runner-up on balance beam (8.90) and floor exercises (9.10) and finished third on the bars (8.90).

The Los Alamos School of Gymanstics Atomics Tumblers sent a pair of representatives to the meet, including Annika Bronkhorst and Jessica Allen.

Bronkhorst, competing in the 13-year-old division, was third overall, earning an all-around of 36.50. Allen placed seventh in the 12-year-old division with her score of 35.70.

Bronkhorst finished as the state runner-up in both the vault (9.45) and balance beam (9.05) competitions, along with taking third in floor exercises (9.15) and fifth on bars (8.85).

Allen, meanwhile, was third in the vault (9.20), fourth on bars (8.85) and seventh in both floor exercises (9.05) and balance beam (8.60).
