Granting our enemies rights

-A A +A
By The Staff

Dear Editor,

The Supreme Court has expanded the very definition of who is an American by granting alien combatants rights under the most sacred of U.S. founding documents, the Constitution. Our highest court in the land has fundamentally changed the very meaning of “We the People” and this could have untold negative consequences for generations to come.

I agree that there are some at Guantanamo who truly are innocent and were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time – I truly feel for them as human beings. However, how quickly we forget what happened to previously released detainees:

“At least 10 detainees released from the Guantanamo Bay prison after U.S. officials concluded they posed little threat have been recaptured or killed fighting U.S. or coalition forces in Pakistan and Afghanistan ... One of the repatriated prisoners is still at large after taking leadership of a militant faction in Pakistan and aligning himself with al Qaeda ee In telephone calls to Pakistani reporters, he has bragged that he tricked his U.S. interrogators into believing he was someone else.” – (2004, Washington Post)

Apparently, the Supreme Court values enemy combatant lives more than the lives of American soldiers, because the release of potentially dangerous elements will without a doubt lead to more U.S. casualties.
