John Stam shot an even-par 36 on the front side of Los Alamos Golf Course Saturday to put himself in the driver’s seat for the 2010 City Championship senior men’s title.

Stam will head into the second round this morning with a 2-shot edge over Reid Griffith and a 3-shot advantage over John Montoya.

The second and final round of the Los Alamos City Championship is scheduled for today. Tee-time is slated for 8:30 a.m.

Stam, the highest-finishing player in the 2009 senior men’s flight taking part in the senior’s tournament this year — neither defending senior champion Eddie Sanchez or 2008 champion Bruce Norman elected to enter the senior men’s draw — rarely wavered from par throughout Saturday’s first round.

His lone hiccup came on holes 13-15, all of which he bogeyed, to finish with a 3-over 39 on the back side.

The next-best finisher from 2009 entered into the draw this year is Griffith, who was seventh overall, seven strokes behind Stam, who finished fourth in the 2009 tournament.

Following Griffith and Montoya, who finished with a solid 78, Steve Boone stayed in contention with his round of 79 Saturday.

All four of Saturday’s top senior’s flight finishers were grouped together Saturday.

Boone bucked a prevalent trend Saturday, shooting better on the back nine (38) than on the front nine (41). Boone went three strokes over after just two holes Saturday, but played at or near par after the turn.
