While Eddie Sanchez had a solid lead heading into the final round of the Senior Men’s City Championship, the defending champ wasn’t going down without a fight.
Bruce Norman, the 2008 senior’s title holder, was at 2-under in Sunday’s final round of the City tournament, which was held at Los Alamos Golf Course this weekend.
Norman, trying to battle back from a 5-shot deficit, turned up the heat on Sanchez, but Sanchez picked up birdies on the 11th and 15th holes and wrested his title back from Norman by two shots.
Sanchez won the 2007 senior’s title, but Norman won the 2008 event, leading that tournament wire-to-wire.
Sunday, Sanchez shot a 2-over 74 to win with a two-day total of 147. Norman’s second-day finish of 71 wasn’t enough to keep hold of his title.
Sanchez finished even on the front Sunday, but took a triple-bogey on the 10th hole, leaving the door wide open for Norman.
However, Sanchez rolled in a 30-foot birdie putt on the 15th which turned the contest around.
Norman didn’t go away empty-handed, however, taking the overall net title at the event.
John Stam, who finished as the runner-up after Saturday’s first round, didn’t fare as well Sunday, shooting a 10-over.
Darren Knox, who was third, bounced back from a rough first day to finish 1-over Sunday.
