Sutton/Sutton takes two-day title by a lone stroke in best ball event

By The Staff

The duo of Curt Norman/Darren Knox needed every saved stroke of a tournament-best round of 66 Monday to prevail in the Memorial Day Best Ball event.
Norman/Knox picked up the victory in the three-day event at Los Alamos Golf Course. The team hung on to edge Kenny Walker/Kevin Brake in the tournament’s top flight, with Walker/Brake finishing just one stroke behind.
The Memorial Day Best Ball tournament, which was held this weekend, is the first major event the LAGC holds annually. This year, the tournament included 17 teams in the three-day competition and nine more in the two-day competition.
Norman, the defending Los Alamos City champion, and Knox, finished with scores of 66 in both Sunday’s and Monday’s play, the two best scores posted in the scratch flight. Walker/Brake had 67s Saturday and Monday — the team led the field by two strokes following the opening round — but Norman/Knox clipped it at the end.
In best ball play, players on a team shoot their own ball throughout the round. The team’s player with the best score at the end of each hole is recorded.
The team of Jim Hoffer/Phil Hoffer finished third in the three-day scratch flight.
In the first flight of two-day play, John Sutton/Jay Sutton also earned a 1-shot victory. Sutton/Sutton nipped TD Sutton/John Stam, shooting a combined net score of 116 over the two rounds. Sutton/Stam led by a stroke after day one, but Sutton/Sutton’s 57 in day two was enough to earn the victory.
Other winners at the tournament included Tony Fox/Stacy Howze in the three-day first flight, Jay Staton/Johnny Osden in the three-day second flight and Min Park/Jin Park in the two-day second flight.
