Despite high winds at Monday’s tournament, Alicia Herrera still inched closer to qualifying for the girls Class AAAA state golf championship.
Both the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys and girls teams played Monday at the Kirtland Central Invitational in Farmington. The tournament was played at the Riverview Golf Course.
Wind conditions made for tough play Monday, with sustained winds blowing 40 miles per hour combined with plenty of gusts.
Herrera, however, shot an 85 to pace her team. Her score was good enough for a third-place finish individually and also earned her a second qualifying leg in as many tournaments this season.
Herrera, a senior who just started her season last week, picked up her first qualifying mark at Friday’s Capital City Invitational. She needs just one more leg to ensure herself of a trip to the AAAA state tournament, which is slated for May 10-11 in Las Cruces.
In team competition Monday, the Hilltopper girls finished in fourth place overall, shooting a combined 416 on the day. The Hilltopper boys, meanwhile, had a team total of 364, also placing them fourth in the final standings.
Piedra Vista turned in an impressive score of 331 to win the boys team competition, while host Kirtland Central won the girls competition with its score of 373.
Los Alamos’ boys were paced by Thomas Herrera.
Herrera, who won Friday in Santa Fe, finished with an 87 Monday.
Following Herrera were teammates Tim Branch (90), Woody Moss (92), Jin Park (95) and Henry Stam (97).
In the girls competition, Hilltopper Shelby Fellows finished with a 100. She was followed by Taylor Engleman (110) and Aislinn McDonald (121).
The Hilltopper teams will make their one and only home appearance of the spring season Monday when they host the Los Alamos Invitational.
