The team of Ted Ball and Curt Norman came back from two strokes down after one day of play to win the Memorial Day Best Ball this weekend.
Ball/Norman shot a 139 in the two-day event, held Sunday and Monday at Los Alamos Golf Course. The team carded a 71 in the opening round, then followed that up with a 68 in the second round.
The Memorial Day Best Ball is the first major tournament of the summer hosted by LAGC. In all, 28 two-person teams took part this weekend.
Ball/Norman was in third place in the scratch flight following Sunday’s play. Both Bruce Takala/Cale Jones and Cheylan Gresham/Joe Gallegos shot 69s in the first round.
But Ball/Norman’s 68 Monday topped Takala/Jones’ day two total by three strokes. The other three teams in the scratch flight all carded 73s.
The victory for Norman was the second straight season he finished on the winning team in the tournament. Norman and his father, Bruce, also came back from a third-place finish in the first round last season to win.
Meanwhile, Bruce Norman and his partner, Marty Hill, won the tournament’s second flight by nine strokes over their nearest competitors.
Brian Colby/Paul Cook won the first flight this weekend, while Randy Balice/Tom Hornsby took top honors in the third flight.
