Gladys Bowman Reed, a longtime Los Alamos resident, passed away on Sunday, December 16, 2007, at the University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque following a brief illness.She is survived by her only son Brent Clyde Reed and his wife Jeanne Marie Reed, and one grandson, Jason Brent Reed, all of Shreveport, Louisiana.Gladys had a wonderful zest for life and lived for her family, her many friends, and her volunteer activities.In January of 1961, Gladys joined the Los Alamos Medical Center Auxiliary. She was appointed by the hospital administrator as the first Director of Volunteers and held the position for 16 years. Her other volunteer assignments over the years included chairing the Candystriper program, serving as hostess in the surgical waiting room, and she especially enjoyed volunteering with the book cart – distributing books and magazines to patients.Gladys served as the LAMC Auxiliary's Hospitality Chair for the past 11 years, planning the annual Membership and Awards Luncheons and creating all of the beautiful decorations and table arrangements. Since 1998, she created the Auxiliary's unique centerpieces for the Annual State Auxiliary Convention in Albuquerque. As Hospitality Chair, Gladys was also called upon to serve food at Cancer Seminars and Heart Council Seminars, as well as for Hospital Week and Nurses Week receptions at LAMC.
