The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls cross country has been so dominant against Class 4A opponents this season it may now be seeking a Class 5A nemesis.
The Hilltopper girls, getting back into action after a week off, finished second at the Rio Rancho Jamboree meet Saturday morning. Los Alamos finished with 81 points, behind only one of the dominant programs in Class 5A, Eldorado.
Los Alamos’ boys and girls took part in the Rio Rancho Jamboree, held at Rio Rancho High School on the same course the Class 4A championship race will be run in three weeks.
Eldorado finished the girls race with 78 points.
In the boys race, Los Alamos finished fourth, earning a score of 149 points. It finished nine points behind third-place Albuquerque Academy, which it has not beaten in 2011 but has stayed within striking distance of.
Cleveland won the boys contest, earning 53 points, easily topping cross-town rival, host school and runner-up Rio Rancho.
In all, 33 boys teams and 32 girls teams took part in the meet, making it one of the largest meets in the state.
For the Hilltopper boys, they were paced for the third consecutive race by Sean Reardon. Reardon cracked the top 10 with his time of 16 minutes, 34 seconds. Alexander Romero was 15th overall, finishing in 16:37.
Los Alamos’ girls put three runners in the top 20 Saturday. Jennifer Mooday, who has emerged as one of the top runners in the state over the course of the season, was fifth overall.
Elizabeth Turner and Jordan Parker followed Mooday, taking the No. 11 and No. 16 spots.
Prior to Saturday’s race, the Hilltoppers took part in the Twilight Festival in Phoenix Sept. 30. Los Alamos’ teams were among the top finishers in the regional event.
Los Alamos has just one regular season meet remaining, that being its home invitational, which is slated for Friday afternoon.
