If the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls track and field team was hoping to lower expectations on itself this season, it didn’t get that job done Saturday.
Los Alamos scored a big victory Saturday at the Albuquerque Public Schools Invitational meet. Los Alamos gathered up 115 team points, more than twice its nearest competitor, St. Pius X. St. Pius finished with 57 points on the day.
Along the way, the Hilltoppers’ star athlete, Emily Weeks, turned in a couple of big performances.
Weeks, the reigning high-point athlete in Class AAAA, earned state championship qualifying marks in both the 100 meters and long jump. Weeks won both events, going 12.78 in the 100 and leaping 16 feet, 9 inches into the long jump pit. She also helped the 400 relay team to a win early in the meet.
Los Alamos’ top returning distance runner, Holly Walker, earned her second state meet qualifying mark of the season, winning the 1,600 meters in a time of 5:31.85.
In all, Los Alamos won nine events on the day.
Laura Wendelberger was a dual winner Saturday, taking victories in both the 100 hurdles (18.37) and high jump (5-0). Also, Molly Willms won both the discus and javelin, beating out teammate Shelby Keffler who finished second in both events.
