The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls tennis team improved its 2013 dual record to 6-2 with a pair of wins this weekend.
The Hilltoppers competed at the Las Vegas Robertson team tournament Saturday. The tournament was played at the Santa Fe and Capital tennis courts.
In the tournament semifinals, Los Alamos downed New Mexico Military Institute 7-2. Los Alamos then went on to win the championship match, cruising to an 8-1 victory over St. Michael’s.
In the semifinal, the Hilltoppers took five of the six singles contests to clinch the victory. Nasim Andrews, playing in the No. 1 slot against NMMI, picked up a straight-set victory, surrendering just three games in the two sets.
Laura Whicker at No. 2 also picked up a straight-set victory, but had to hold on in a tiebreaker to win the second set. Astrid Hengartner, Danielle Ortiz and Maia Menefee were also singles competition winners for the Hilltoppers, while Hengartner/Whicker and Michelle Alexander/Kristen Funsten won in doubles.
Against St. Michael’s in the final round, Los Alamos swept the Nos. 2-6 singles and took all three doubles contests. Madeline Margevicius, Susana Lucido, Sidra Hseieh-Ratliff, Andrews and Whicker all won their singles contests in straight sets with Whicker dropping just one game at the No. 6 slot.
