The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls tennis team finished second in the final team standings at the Los Alamos Invitational Tournament this weekend.
The tournament, despite the name, was played in Santa Fe Friday and Saturday. In all, 13 teams took part in the double-elimination draw.
The Hilltoppers picked up 12 team points at the tournament, topping both Cleveland and Taos, which finished tied for third with 8 points. Farmington, the defending Class AAAA champion, doubled-up on the Hilltoppers, scoring 24 team points at the tournament.
In the three singles draws and two doubles draws, Los Alamos picked up a runner-up spot and a third-place finish.
In the No. 2 singles contest, Hilltopper freshman Colleen Fitzsimmons took second place. Fitzsimmons, the third seed in the draw, dropped both Roswell’s Perla Franco and Hope Christian’s Amanda Cantrell, giving up just four games in those two contests, before falling in the final to Farmington’s Molly Merrion, 6-2, 6-0.
In No. 1 doubles, Los Alamos’ team of Gina Stroud/Susanna Lucido earned a three-set victory over Miymura’s Miranda Rodriguez/Ari Aretino-Reeves to advance to that draw’s semifinal before losing to a very good team from Roswell, Samantha Dunn/Bailey Martinez.
Stroud/Lucido would bounce back to beat Taos’ Tessa Zangara/Izzy Slater. Zangara/Slater took the first set 6-4, but Stroud/Lucido recovered to take the final two sets 6-4, 6-4.
Hilltopper No. 1 single Brenna O’Hara won the consolation bracket this weekend. Gwynn Cunningham — a Los Alamos player representing short-handed Capital — took the consolation title in the No. 3 singles, while Andrea Hengartner/Beth Wendelberger finished fourth in the No. 2 doubles.
