The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls tennis team opened its season with a solid showing this weekend.Los Alamos finished in a tie for second place in team competition at the Carlsbad Invitational, knotting with El Paso (Texas) Burgess. The host Cavemen won the team title.Friday’s first day of the tournament featured wind gusts of approximately 60 miles and hour, and sustained wind of 40 miles per hour delayed Friday afternoon’s play for about four hours.The Hilltoppers had three singles players and a doubles team advance into the final round at the tournament, which concluded Saturday.Brenna O’Hara, at No. 3 singles, Megan Townsley at No. 4 singles and Lauren Castro at No. 6 singles, as well as the doubles team of Grace Kim/O’Hara all got to the final round of play, but all fell to players from Carlsbad.It was a good start to the 2007-08 season for the Hilltoppers, said head coach Bruce Cottrell.“All the other teams have been playing for about four weeks,” Cottrell said.
