The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls tennis team took fourth at Saturday’s tournament among 10 competing teams.

Los Alamos was the host school at Saturday’s tournament, although the tournament was played at Santa Fe High School.

Los Alamos finished with eight team points, placing them one point ahead of Santa Fe in fifth place.

Interestingly, all of the competing teams scored at least one point at the tournament.

Saturday’s tournament was played in cold, blustery conditions, but Hilltopper head coach Bruce Cottrell said he was happy with his team’s overall effort.

Farmington, the team Los Alamos was scheduled to face March 27 in head-to-head competition at Taos before snow called off the meeting, won Saturday’s tournament with 20 team points. Roswell finished with 17 points, good enough for second place.

The Hilltoppers didn’t play most of their top players Saturday.

Colleen Fitzsimmons got the nod to play in the No. 1 singles bracket, advancing to the quarterfinals by topping Hope Christian’s Heather Morgan in straight sets.

At No. 3 singles, Andrea Hertgardner likewise advanced to the tournament quarterfinals, picking up an opening round win against Española Valley’s Franchesca Lopez before falling to Hope Christian’s Holly Wofford.
