The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls tennis team took fourth at Saturday’s tournament among 10 competing teams.
Los Alamos was the host school at Saturday’s tournament, although the tournament was played at Santa Fe High School.
Los Alamos finished with eight team points, placing them one point ahead of Santa Fe in fifth place.
Interestingly, all of the competing teams scored at least one point at the tournament.
Saturday’s tournament was played in cold, blustery conditions, but Hilltopper head coach Bruce Cottrell said he was happy with his team’s overall effort.
Farmington, the team Los Alamos was scheduled to face March 27 in head-to-head competition at Taos before snow called off the meeting, won Saturday’s tournament with 20 team points. Roswell finished with 17 points, good enough for second place.
The Hilltoppers didn’t play most of their top players Saturday.
Colleen Fitzsimmons got the nod to play in the No. 1 singles bracket, advancing to the quarterfinals by topping Hope Christian’s Heather Morgan in straight sets.
At No. 3 singles, Andrea Hertgardner likewise advanced to the tournament quarterfinals, picking up an opening round win against Española Valley’s Franchesca Lopez before falling to Hope Christian’s Holly Wofford.
The Hilltoppers doubles teams of Brenna O’Hara/Madeline Margevicius in the No. 1 flight and Heather Walters/Jamie Benage in the No. 2 flight advanced the furthest of the Hilltopper contingent in their brackets, both reaching the tournament finals.
O’Hara/Margevicius rolled through Caroline Holland/Danielle Brimhall of Piedra Vista in the quarterfinals, 6-0, 6-0, then took two sets from Shelby Wier/Michelle Carmona of Roswell.
In the final, the top Farmington squad of Kami Blackwood/Darrah Blackwater proved to be too much for O’Hara/Margevicius, winning 6-1, 6-1.
Walters/Benage topped Santa Fe’s Rachel Miller/Melissa Miller in the quarterfinals, then tripped up Farmington’s Gina McKenzie/Molly Merrion 6-3, 6-1 to get into the bracket’s title match.
In the bracket final, Walters/Benage lost a tight two-set contest to Samantha Dunn/Mary Romero, 6-4, 6-4.
At No. 2 singles, Erin Dinehart was knocked out from the championshp flight early by Shayla Baysinger of Farmington. Dinehart did advance in the consolation bracket by topping Hope’s Amanda Cantrell, but would lose in the consolation semifinals to Española Valley’s Robyn Martinez.
In the top singles’ flight, Ali Rhodes of Piedra Vista was the winner, topping Hannah Merrion of Farmington 6-4, 6-4.
Rhodes’ teammate, Lisa Gregori, was the winner of the girls No. 2 singles flight.
