Despite the rough weather this weekend, the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls tennis team picked up the regular season District 2AAAA title this weekend.

Los Alamos topped Española Valley 7-2 Saturday and got a concession victory over Taos to clinch the title to clinch a spot in the Class AAAA state meet. This weekend’s pre-District 2AAAA meet was played at Capital.

The Hilltoppers, whose main competition in 2AAAA is the Taos Tigers, as it has been for virtually the entire decade they’ve played in the district, won the Nos. 3-6 singles matches Friday before heavy rains came, washing out the remainder of the contest.

Los Alamos’ No. 1, Brenna O’Hara, appeared to be on her way to picking up a victory in that slot as well, winning the first set against Taos.

Hilltopper head coach Bruce Cottrell said he was happy to see his team get its business taken care of this weekend and assure itself of advancing to the state playoffs next month.

Gillian Hsieh-Ratliff, Gina Stroud, Susanna Lucido and Andrea Hengarten were all winners in their singles matches against the Tigers.

Colleen Fitzsimmons, who was promoted to No. 2 single this week, was up a set in her match with Taos Friday, then came back Saturday to pick up a win at No. 1 single against Española Valley. Hsieh-Ratliff, Lucido, Hengarten and Gwyn Cunningham were all straight-set winners Saturday, while Nasim Andrews held on at No. 6 singles to win 6-3, 3-6 10-1.

Los Alamos’ third match of the weekend, against Bernalillo, was also cut short. Cottrell said it will try to reschedule that match prior to the 2AAAA tournament April 30-May 1.Despite the rough weather this weekend, the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls tennis team picked up the regular season District 2AAAA title this weekend.
