SANTA FE — Bruce Cottrell made no attempt to hide his displeasure with his top doubles team early in its final contest Saturday.
Española Valley’s team of Robyn Martinez/Arianna Espinoza took a game in the first set of the District 2-4A championship doubles match, something that didn’t sit well with Cottrell, the veteran head coach of the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls tennis team, and he let Colleen Fitzsimmons and Gillian Hsieh-Ratliff know it.
But the team got the message and turned things around in a hurry, reeling off four straight games to close out the first set. Fitzsimmons/Hsieh-Ratliff cruised from there to a 6-1, 6-1 victory and the district doubles title.
“I had to be more aggressive,” said Fitzsimmons, Los Alamos’ top player. “I was not coming to the net. Our serve-and-volley went a lot better. We lessened our unforced errors.”
Los Alamos, which has dominated the 2-4A ranks since the district was formed in 2000, won the team title, the doubles title and singles player Nasim Andrews finished as the district’s runner-up.
Andrews and Susanna Lucido both earned their way into the state 4A singles draw. Brackets are scheduled to be released for next week’s 4A state tournament later today.
