How the Class AAAA girls soccer state tree will finally shake out is almost anyone’s guess at this point, but the Los Alamos Hilltoppers made as good of a closing argument as they could.
The Hilltoppers picked up two big wins in consecutive nights at home to end their 2010 regular season. Friday, they topped St. Michael’s in an overtime battle, 2-1, then earned a shootout win Saturday over the Aztec Tigers, also by a final of 2-1.
With the state playoff brackets scheduled to be released today, Los Alamos could reasonably fall anywhere between Nos. 3 and 7. However, the two wins to close out the season could have the New Mexico Activities Association seeding committee cause to bump the Hilltoppers up a place or two.
Los Alamos, however, isn’t going to sweat about it too much right now, especially after two nail-biting contests in a row.
“This one is huge,” said Hilltopper Stephanie Blair, who made two of the biggest plays of the day against Aztec, including converting the penalty kick that sealed the victory. “This will probably bring our seed up in state. It’s so huge, so important that we won this game.”
