Another shootout, another shootout loss.
Los Alamos and St. Pius X, two of the premier programs in Class AAAA, met for a nondistrict girls soccer tilt Saturday at Sullivan Field.
Although Los Alamos was well in control of Saturday’s game, St. Pius converted a penalty kick late in regulation and sent the game into a shootout. In the shootout, Los Alamos misfired on three of four attempts and St. Pius picked up the 3-1 shootout victory.
It was the third time this season the Hilltoppers have had to go to penalty kicks to decide a game they had numerous opportunities of winning in regulation.
And it was the third shootout loss.
“It’s starting to take its toll,” Hilltopper fullback Laura Nelson said following the game. “It’s really difficult going to a shootout…it’s something we have to practice. Hopefully, we’ll start getting the ball into the net and we won’t have to go to a shootout.”
The Hilltoppers outshot St. Pius’ Sartans 20-12 in the contest, putting 8 shots-on-goal. Only one of those went in during regulation, however.
“The whole season, that’s the way we’ve played,” Los Alamos head coach Jiri Kubicek said. “We did that against Academy, Las Cruces. We dominate the game, then we go to penalty kicks.”
