The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls soccer team was again routed Friday, but this time by a team it really wanted to beat.
The Hilltoppers fell on the road Friday to the top-ranked Albuquerque Academy Chargers. The Chargers ran away with the big Class AAAA contest, 5-1.
This was the first time in three seasons the Chargers scored a victory over the Hilltoppers during the regular season, although, the Chargers bounced back in each of the previous two seasons to top the Hilltoppers in the state championship game.
Friday’s win for Academy (8-2) was its fourth of the season by at least four goals. Los Alamos’ lone goal kept it from being Academy’s fifth shutout victim in 2010.
Things didn’t go well from the get-go for Los Alamos, giving up a goal in the early seconds and three more before halftime.
“We went down 4-0 at halftime and the game’s over,” Los Alamos head coach Jiri Kubicek said. “We could not create any chances. We had some chances in the second half, but with a 4-0 lead, they relaxed.”
Laura Wendelberger scored in the second half to stave off a shutout, receiving a good crossing pass from Cassidy Reeves.
