Despite winning a district championship Thursday, the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls soccer team has bigger fish to fry.
And head coach Jiri Kubicek knows the Hilltoppers will have to turn up the heat if they want to fry them properly.
“It was some kind of sluggish game (Thursday),” Kubicek said of his team’s 7-0 win at Bernalillo. “We scored a couple of goals in the first four minutes. After that, we didn’t do much.”
Los Alamos clinched its fourth-straight District 2AAAA title Thursday, improving its district record to 6-0 (12-4 overall) with three scheduled games remaining and one potential make-up game.
The Hilltoppers have had little competition in the district since the departure of St. Pius X after the 2004 season. None of their district opponents this season have scored a goal against them and that’s unlikely to change against either Taos or, in their potential make-up contest, against Española Valley.
Los Alamos very nearly allowed a goal Thursday against Bernalillo, however, something Kubicek was less-than-thrilled about. Los Alamos was whistled for a foul with about five minutes remaining in regulation, but the ensuing Spartan penalty kick went over the crossbar.
