Next stop for the Los Alamos Rugby Club will be the Emerald Isle.

The local U19 girls rugby club, which has held a pair of recent fund-raising dinners at the Los Alamos Elks Club and a recent fund-raising car wash in the Los Alamos National Bank parking lot, has earned enough money for an excursion to Ireland.

The Los Alamos club will head to Ireland Wednesday. In Ireland, the rugby club will take part in three training sessions with international coaches and will play a pair of matches.

The Irish visit, which the team is scheduled to return from June 26, is a treat for the LARC, which wrapped-up a successful 2008 campaign in the fall and received some big accolades afterward.

In 2008, the U19 squad made it to the semifinals of its league championship, losing a tight match to Summit County, Colo. Summit County went on to win the league title and place fifth in the national championship tournament.

Los Alamos wound up finishing third in the league tournament. It was also given the tournament’s sportsmanship award, as voted by the league’s other coaches.

Following the season, several of the local U19 players were given awards, including three girls being named to the Eastern Rocky Rugby Football Union Select-Side Team.

Sidney Provan, Michelle Dinkel and Lauren Mendez were all picked for the Select-Side honors.

Along with those three, Liz Dinkel was chosen for the U23 Select-Side team and was chosen to represent the West Rugby Football Union All-Stars in an inter-territorial tournament. The tournament started June 11 wraps up today.

The inter-territorial tournament is a national event to which some of the top rugby players are invited.

For their visit to Ireland, the girls will fly into Dublin, then travel to Galaway, Dell City and Limerick.

LARC has an open-participation policy and extends invitations to anyone learning how to play rugby. It organizes both boys and girls programs from elementary school to high school.
