The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls golf team limped through its worst showing of the 2010-11 season Monday.
Los Alamos opened up its spring half of the season at the Ruidoso Invitational, which continued today. In the opening round Monday, Los Alamos shot a 395, 40 shots above its worst score of the fall season.
The tournament’s opening round was played at the Links at Sierra Blanca. Today’s round was scheduled for Cree Meadows Golf Course.
Los Alamos, which qualified for the state tournament during the fall season, wanted to get a look at its potential opponents from the southern part of the state, many of which take part at the annual Ruidoso tournament.
Sunday night, Los Alamos’ No. 1 player, Miranda Olinger, had a food allergy reaction and spent several hours in the emergency room. Olinger gutted out Monday’s round but turned in her worst score in more than six years.
Shelby Fellows had the Hilltoppers’ low round with a score of 93. Aislinn Engleman finished with a 96.
“Every cloud has its silver lining,” Los Alamos head coach Mike Lippiat said. “We learned a lot today what our potential is. Even though we shot huge numbers, we managed to be tied for fourth place.”
