Girls golf: Toppers shoot 380 in first round at Kirtland Central

After two straight struggles to open the spring 2011 season, the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls golf team showed signs it might be getting back on track.
Los Alamos finished with a team score of 380 shots in the opening round of the Kirtland Central Invitational. Los Alamos was just one of three teams playing both rounds of the tournament — Kirtland Central and Farmington were the others.
The Hilltoppers were expecting a big showing this spring but things got off to a rocky start. The Hilltoppers struggled at the Ruidoso Invitational two weeks ago and didn’t see much better results at last week’s Los Alamos Spring Invitational.
Hilltopper head coach Mike Lippiatt said he felt better about Monday’s round in Farmington.
“We definitely turned the corner a little bit today and got things back in the direction we need them to go,” Lippiatt said.
A trio of Los Alamos players, Miranda Olinger, Shelby Fellows and Taylor Engleman, all finished in the low-to-mid 90s range, helping Los Alamos shave 38 strokes off its finish at home last week.
Los Alamos has already qualified for the Class 4A state tournament, which will be held May 9-10 in Albuquerque, but is hoping to get some momentum going prior to that tournament.
