SANTA FE — A 9-0 run spanning nearly four minutes set the tone early for the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls basketball team Tuesday.
In its final regular season District 2AAAA contest, the Hilltoppers held the Capital Jaguars to just two points in the opening quarter and just four in the final quarter to win going away, 52-28 at Edward Ortiz Gymnasium.
Los Alamos never trailed in the game, scoring early and often in the first quarter while confounding the Capital offense for most of the contest.
The win secured a second-place finish in 2AAAA this season for Los Alamos (12-12 overall, 6-2 in district), the third straight season Los Alamos ends up in the runner-up spot. By virtue of its second place finish, Los Alamos will host the 2AAAA tournament semifinal game Feb. 24.
The Hilltoppers will finish off their regular season on the road. They will play a tough Class 4A team, Piedra Vista, Saturday afternoon. The two teams had to postpone a nondistrict game in late December.
Tuesday, Los Alamos jumped all over Capital, taking control of the contest midway through the first quarter. Hilltopper freshmen McKenzie Logan, who got the starting nod Tuesday, and Hayley Each both turned in big performances in the first half. Logan finished with eight points at the break and Each with seven, converting a late 3-point play to give Los Alamos a 28-13 edge heading into the locker room, its biggest lead of the game to that point.
Each finished with a team-high 14 points. Each was the beneficiary of some of the best entry passing Los Alamos displayed all season and had several strong moves to the basket, taking advantage of a big height disparity in the paint.
For Capital, veteran wing Sarah Romero had a game-high 19 points, but got precious little help from her teammates. Capital, playing without its star, Dominique Vigil-Lovato, held out by head coach Gil Gonzales, reportedly for disciplinary reasons, had only two other players besides Romero get into the scoring column.
Tina Radosevich had 11 points for the Hilltoppers, while Logan finished with 10. Radosevich, Kamille Chavez and Anna Scott combined for six steals.
