SANTA FE — A 9-0 run spanning nearly four minutes set the tone early for the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls basketball team Tuesday.
In its final regular season District 2AAAA contest, the Hilltoppers held the Capital Jaguars to just two points in the opening quarter and just four in the final quarter to win going away, 52-28 at Edward Ortiz Gymnasium.
Los Alamos never trailed in the game, scoring early and often in the first quarter while confounding the Capital offense for most of the contest.
The win secured a second-place finish in 2AAAA this season for Los Alamos (12-12 overall, 6-2 in district), the third straight season Los Alamos ends up in the runner-up spot. By virtue of its second place finish, Los Alamos will host the 2AAAA tournament semifinal game Feb. 24.
The Hilltoppers will finish off their regular season on the road. They will play a tough Class 4A team, Piedra Vista, Saturday afternoon. The two teams had to postpone a nondistrict game in late December.
