BERNALILLO — A rough start to Tuesday night’s District 2AAAA-opening game could’ve spelled disaster for the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls basketball team.
The Bernalillo Spartans controlled the action throughout the first eight minutes Tuesday night, but the Hilltoppers got things together early in the second quarter and never looked back.
Los Alamos held Bernalillo to just two points in the second quarter and four points in the third as it rolled to a 45-27 victory in the first district contest for both teams.
Sparked by their bench players, the Hilltoppers (7-10 overall, 1-0 in 2AAAA) forced nine Spartan turnovers in the second period. Guard Anna Scott had four steals in the quarter, meanwhile McKenzie Logan buried a long-range 3-pointer to chop what had been an eight-point Bernalillo edge down to just one at the 6:45 mark.
Los Alamos, which limped through the early part of its 2010-11 season, started to pick up its game with a big road victory Jan. 7 over St. Pius X. Los Alamos has now won four of its last five contest, its lone defeat during that time was to Class 5A powerhouse Sandia.
