Girls basketball: Toppers open 2AAAA play with win

BERNALILLO — A rough start to Tuesday night’s District 2AAAA-opening game could’ve spelled disaster for the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls basketball team.
The Bernalillo Spartans controlled the action throughout the first eight minutes Tuesday night, but the Hilltoppers got things together early in the second quarter and never looked back.
Los Alamos held Bernalillo to just two points in the second quarter and four points in the third as it rolled to a 45-27 victory in the first district contest for both teams.
Sparked by their bench players, the Hilltoppers (7-10 overall, 1-0 in 2AAAA) forced nine Spartan turnovers in the second period. Guard Anna Scott had four steals in the quarter, meanwhile McKenzie Logan buried a long-range 3-pointer to chop what had been an eight-point Bernalillo edge down to just one at the 6:45 mark.
Los Alamos, which limped through the early part of its 2010-11 season, started to pick up its game with a big road victory Jan. 7 over St. Pius X. Los Alamos has now won four of its last five contest, its lone defeat during that time was to Class 5A powerhouse Sandia.
In the first quarter, the pressure defense from Bernalillo (5-12, 0-1 in 2AAAA) befuddled Los Alamos, while the Spartans ran a near-flawless transition offense that resulted in six quick buckets — Marisa Valencia and Cedar Rain Yellowmule split those 12 points evenly.
When the Hilltoppers settled in on both sides of the court, forcing the Spartans to play half-court offense and defense, it was the Spartans who couldn’t make the adjustments. The Spartans went the entire second quarter, plus several minutes at the end of the first and start of the third, without a field goal.
Logan finished with a game-high 14 points. Every Hilltopper who entered the game Tuesday night ended up in the scoring column.
Valencia had eight points to pace Bernalillo.
In the other 2AAAA game Tuesday, defending district champ Española Valley (12-2, 1-0) thumped Santa Fe (8-9, 0-1) 52-20.
Capital lost a nondistrict game to St. Pius, 55-46, Tuesday.
