Girls basketball: Toppers lose finale on road

-A A +A
By Mike Cote

The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls basketball team fell in its season finale Saturday night in the Four Corners.
Nevertheless, Hilltopper head coach Tarah Logan thought plenty of positive things came out of Saturday’s game as her team heads into the postseason.
Los Alamos and Piedra Vista were locked in a defensive struggle throughout the game, but the Panthers would ultimately prevail 43-33 in Farmington.
The game was a make-up from December, a road game that was postponed due to a winter storm that hit the area. The game was originally scheduled as the first of a three-game swing through the Four Corners for the Hilltoppers.
The Panthers finish the season at 13-12, but had to forfeit eight victories early in the season after it was determined they had used an ineligible player in those wins. The Panthers play a similar style to that of current Class 4A No. 1 team Kirtland Central, and the two teams played a pair of District 1 games decided by a total of six points.
Los Alamos and Piedra Vista combined to score just five points in the second quarter. Piedra Vista managed just six points in the third quarter but Los Alamos (12-14) could come up with only two in the same frame.
The defensive effort by her team against a good running squad like Piedra Vista was enough to impress Logan, however.
