The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls basketball team picked up a big victory in its final outing before the start of the District 2AAAA season.
On the road at Class 5A Manzano, Los Alamos broke open a tight ballgame in the second half, holding the Monarchs to just 10 second half points.
A balanced scoring attack, with eight players getting into the action, propelled the Hilltoppers to a decisive 46-30 victory in Albuquerque.
“We had a fantastic game,” Los Alamos head coach Tarah Logan said. “The girls all played well. In that second half, we started hitting the shots.”
Logan said she thought a switch in defensive tactics started to get the Hilltoppers rolling. The Hilltoppers opened the game in man-to-man defense, but threw in a 2-3 zone in the second quarter which seemed to slow the Monarchs (4-5) down.
Los Alamos, which put together one of its best games of the season earlier this week against Class 4A Belen, seems to have momentum heading into the district opener. Los Alamos faces Bernalillo on the road Tuesday to open the 2AAAA season.
The win was the team’s third in four games.
The Hilltoppers (5-10) outrebounded the Monarchs 18-10 Saturday and limited their turnovers to just nine, one of their lowest totals of the season.
