Girls basketball: LA holds together to grab road win

Following a rough game Wednesday night at home against the Albuquerque Academy Chargers, the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls varsity basketball team had to go on the road against the Del Norte Knights Thursday. The results were kind of as Los Alamos head coach Gerry Washburn expected.“We sleepwalked through the first half,” Washburn said of Thursday’s game. “We couldn’t buy a basket. We were worn out from the night before.”Nevertheless, the Hilltoppers, despite their offensive struggles, still played solid defense and earned a 31-25 win in Albuquerque. It was the first road game of the season for Los Alamos. The day didn’t start off well. One of the buses the Hilltoppers took down to Del Norte broke down on Interstate 25, and the two sub-varsity teams had to be rescued. In the game, Los Alamos was able to set itself up with some good looks on offense, but wasn’t able to get any of its shots to fall, very similar to what happened the night before against Academy, a game won by Los Alamos 35-32.Washburn said the Hilltoppers’ first two shots of the game were wide open looks, but both were off-target.However, the defense was as good as it had been against Academy, and ultimately ended up being the difference in Thursday’s game.“I love the heart,” Washburn said. “The Academy game was as good as good of defense as I’ve seen. Last night, as tired as they were, they still played solid defense.”Washburn said at this stage of the season, he’s very happy with how his defense is playing, and has few worries about the offense, which he said will start getting its shots to drop in plenty of time for district, which is nearly two months away.
