The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls basketball team again struggled in its second outing against the Volcano Vista Hawks.
Tuesday night, the Hilltoppers were held to a total of six points in the first and third quarters as the Class 5A Hawks took a 57-26 victory in Albuquerque.
Volcano Vista (11-2), which has been steadily improving through the last several seasons and has a true senior class for the first time since the school opened nearly four years ago, is likely to be a contender in the very competitive District 1-5A, spearheaded by bruising junior guard Emma Fenske.
It was the second win of the season by the Hawks over the Hilltoppers (3-9), who have a grueling week of games, including a huge contest Friday night at St. Pius X. The Hawks knocked off the Hilltoppers 55-39 in the first round of the Joe Armijo Invitational last month.
Hilltopper head coach Tarah Logan said her team reacted better to the Hawks’ full-court pressure than it did in their Dec. 9 meeting, but struggled with its shooting. Los Alamos connected on just 11 of 49 attempts from the floor (22.4 percent).
