The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls basketball team put together its most dominant performance of the season Tuesday in topping Belen.
Los Alamos held Belen to just 17 points in the first half at home Tuesday. Meanwhile, Hilltopper Erin Kirk turned in a double-double performance with 11 points and 13 rebounds as Los Alamos knocked off Belen’s Eagles 60-46 at Griffith Gymnasium.
The Hilltoppers dominated virtually every aspect of Tuesday’s game and earned their third straight victory over a Class 4A opponent. The Hilltoppers grabbed 48 boards and forced 34 Eagle turnovers.
Los Alamos hit Belen with full-court pressure in the second quarter, which Belen struggled to get past. Guard Kamille Chavez intercepted three passes under Los Alamos’ bucket and converted those in the span of about a minute.
The Hilltoppers outscored the Eagles 28-10 in the second quarter. Chavez had eight points and Kirk finished with five points in the frame.
With the District 2AAAA opener just a week away, Los Alamos head coach Tarah Logan said things are starting to gel.
“We are getting better at playing aggressively for all four quarters,” Logan said. “Everyone is working hard to get better every day. Passes have improved drastically and we are attacking the basket better.”
