The Los Alamos Middle School Hawk eighth-grade basketball team took top honors in the tournament it hosted last weekend.LAMS knocked off Pecos’ Panthers in the first round of the tournament, then topped the McCurdy Bobcats 21-13 in the championship round to win the event.Meanwhile, the Hawk seventh-graders fell to Pecos in the first round, but bounced back in the third-place game to beat Ortiz.In the eighth-grade championship game, LAMS was able to generate some transition scoring. That, combined with some solid man-to-man defense, was the difference in the contest.Chase Ealey had seven points to lead LAMS in the title game, while teammate Emily Funsten added four.Lynne Cash, Christine Larribas, Jenna Ortiz and Jordan George all finished with two points each. Jen Paul also tallied a point in the title game.Ealey had 10 points against Pecos, second on the team to Monika Teter, who finished with 12. Alex Foster and Amethyst Collins had six for LAMS, while Katie Hemphill finished with four.Also scoring for LAMS against Pecos were Larribas (three points), Cash, Paul and Rachel Anaya (two points each).In the seventh-grade tournament, LAMS had trouble boxing out Pecos on the boards, which made a difference in the 21-18 loss.Vanessa Lowe, McKenna Schoonover and Erin Kirk each had four points for LAMS in the loss.
