Girls basketball: Elks top LA with late scores

While there are some questions surrounding the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls basketball team heading into the 2010-11 season, the Hilltoppers showed they might have some answers soon.
Friday night in their season debut, the Hilltoppers looked like they might pull out a big win against a very tough opponent the Pojoaque Elks. Instead, however, the Elks rallied from a late 6-pont deficit to earn a 53-51 victory.
Los Alamos opened its 2010-11 campaign Friday night at Griffith Gymnasium.
Los Alamos, which is starting off this season with the vast majority of its roster lacking any meaningful varsity experience, played tough team defense in the second half, particularly the bulk of the fourth quarter, to get the edge on Pojoaque (1-0).
Pojoaque, which has remained one of Los Alamos’ chief rivals despite the two teams playing in different classifications for better than a decade, is considered by some a legitimate contender at the Class AAA level this season, assuming it can survive what is quite possibly the toughest district in the state.
However, the Elks are under new management this season. Following the departure of Lanse Carter, the Elks’ reins were taken by Juan “Pepe” Alvarado, who has previously coached in the southern part of the state.
