Get prepared to put your science skills to the test. The Los Alamos County Science Fair will be held Jan. 26 at the Los Alamos High School cafeteria. The community can view what participants created from noon-2:30 p.m.The mission of the science fair is to help students develop projects and communicate their understanding of the scientific method and/or engineering principles.Students in first through 12th grade can enter in elementary, junior and senior divisions. The elementary projects are divided into three categories. The students in junior and senior divisions will compete for first, second and third place in 13 categories. This will give elementary students an opportunity to participate in the Northeastern New Mexico Regional Science and Engineering Fair in Las Vegas March 8.Every student will receive feedback from the judges, which will assess the student’s scientific approach, skills, creativity, clarity and thoroughness. Therefore, the participation in the County Science Fair is valuable experience for student learning. Participation at the Science Fair helps the students to achieve State Standard I for every student in every grade level. This standard requires students to understand the processes of scientific investigations and use inquiry and scientific ways of observing, experimenting, predicting and validating to think critically. Our local sponsors who provide special awards make the Los Alamos County Science Fair a memorable event. If people are interested in sponsoring an award for the fair, judging or volunteering contact Dawn Brown, science fair coordinator, at 663-2232.For more information, see the Los Alamos Public School website, www.laschools.net/science-fair.
