The local YMCA hopes that they can inspire Los Alamos residents to get on their feet this weekend to kick off America on the Move Week.
America on the Move Week will be held Saturday through Sept. 27, with a goal to surpass the number of footsteps participants logged in 2007 by 20 million.
“All you have to do to participate in this event is come into the YMCA or the Teen Center in Espaola and sign up to participate and you’ll receive a free pedometer,” said Melanie Chapman, YMCA fitness director.
Los Alamos Medical Center is the sponsor of the event and Chapman hopes with their help to reach this year’s goal.
“The Family YMCA’s goal this year is 27 million steps. This will contribute to the national YMCA’s goal of 10 billion steps,” Chapman said.
Last year’s goal of 7 million steps was bypassed by far, with 24,164,679 steps, for 650 participants.
This year, the local YMCA, along with the Teen Center in Espaola, will distribute 1,500 pedometers. The YMCA is holding a local team challenge looking for teams of 10 members, while at the same time issuing an inter-departmental challenge to fellow staff members.
