Construction crews working at the Municipal Complex site hit a gas line on the shoulder of Iris Street about 9:45 a.m. Wednesday.
Department of Public Utilities (DPU) crews happened to be onsite and were able to repair the rupture in about 10 minutes.
The wind blew the gas toward 125 Central Park Square, and DPU began receiving calls from tenants about smelling gas. The building was evacuated as a safety precaution and fire crews were called in.
Once fire crews spoke with the DPU crews and confirmed that the situation was under control, tenants were allowed to reenter the building.
