Football: Status of players is still unknown

The status of three football players who were cited for minor in possession earlier this week was still unclear as of this morning heading into a nondistrict game with Albuquerque Academy.

At approximately 3 a.m. Sunday, a vehicle containing three Hilltopper players was pulled over by Los Alamos police. According to the police report, alcohol and drug paraphernalia were found inside the vehicle.

Los Alamos Public Schools’ athletic policy calls for a 30-day suspension for student-athletes who are found using or possessing alcohol, drug paraphernalia, under the influence or suspected of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Los Alamos High School athletic director Vicki Nelms declined to comment on the situation, however this morning LAPS’ interim superintendent Mary McLeod said she believed an appeal by the football players was forthcoming. As of this morning, however, McLeod said she was unaware of an appeal having been filed.

McLeod said an appeal of suspension would first be filed with the assistant superintendent’s office. If the players or players’ families were unhappy with the assistant superintendent’s decision, they could appeal to her.

If the appeal was still unsatisfactory to the parties, they could elect to appeal the Los Alamos School Board.
