ALBUQUERQUE (AP) — New Mexico head football coach Mike Locksley has signed a new contract that would save the university thousands of dollars if the Lobo athletic department decide to sever their ties early with the coach.
Locksley has been head coach at New Mexico since 2008. His teams have won two games and lost 22 in his first two years.
New Mexico recently renegotiated his contract.
The new agreement would pay Locksley $450,000 if he’s fired after the 2011 season.
Under the previous contract, the university would have owed Locksley more than $1 million, or $365,000 for each year remaining on the contract if he was fired prior to 2014.
The newly approved contract also eliminates any penalties against Locksley if he leaves the university before the contract expires.
