The Los Alamos Hilltopper football team took another one on the chin Saturday in its final nondistrict contest of the season.
Facing its fourth ranked opponent in five weeks, the Hilltoppers were thumped on the road at Albuquerque Academy. The Hilltoppers tried to hang with the Academy Chargers, a Class AAA team, early on, scoring a touchdown to cut a 14-0 Charger lead in half, but the Chargers would go on to score five unanswered touchdowns to win 49-7 at Richard Harper Memorial Stadium.
Heading into Saturday’s game, Academy (5-0) was the sixth-ranked team in Class AAA. Football is the only sport in which Academy competes at the AAA level, although the Chargers have blasted both their Class AAAA opponents this season, Los Alamos and Bernalillo, by a combined 97-7.
The Hilltoppers (1-5) have now lost five straight games, three of them by 40 points or more, heading into their District 2AAAA opener at Bernalillo this Friday night. Bernalillo, the reigning champion in 2AAAA, topped Piedra Vista Friday 48-21.
In other games around the state this weekend, Raton won big over Pojoaque 40-15, McCurdy pounded Dulce 47-14 and, in one of the biggest Class 5A games of the season, La Cueva posted a decisive 45-12 victory over Mayfield.
