It’s a new football season. For all intents and purposes, anyway.
Despite a rough nondistrict season for the Los Alamos Hilltoppers, in which it lost five straight contests, things can be righted in a hurry. Los Alamos will have an opportunity to put a lot of struggles behind it quickly Friday night at Bernalillo.
The Hilltoppers open the District 2AAAA season Friday at Bernalillo when they take on the Spartans.
The two teams have had pretty similar nondistrict seasons, each winning just once, but the winner of Friday night’s game will be right in the mix for a district title in 2010.
The other could be out of the running as soon as the clock hits zeroes.
“They’re kind of in the same boat as us,” Los Alamos head coach Garett Williams said. “The good thing about the start of district play, it’s a new beginning for the both of us. It’s a good opportunity for both of us.”
And the district race appears to be wide open heading into the teams’ openers.
Currently, none of the 2AAAA teams have a record above .500, although with its 44-42 victory over Taos last weekend, Santa Fe tied its season record up at 3-3.
Santa Fe, the new kid on the district block, might be handicapped as the slight favorite heading into 2AAAA play.
