The Los Alamos Hilltopper football team is already well versed in all things athletic and all things fundraising, and summer vacation is just two weeks in.
Coming up this week, Hilltopper head coach Garett Williams and a posse of parents are hitting the greens while his boys hit the field.
The Hilltopper Gridiron Booster Club is working with Williams to raise funds for the program for the 2011 season with a golf tournament Friday. Registration for the tournament closes Tuesday.
“We’re hoping this golf tournament not only turns in to a great fundraiser, but also a fun event that the community looks forward to each year,” said Williams. “We’re had quite a few businesses around our area sponsor this event by providing us with a lot of great prizes.”
The fundraiser has been implemented to buy new safety equipment for the upcoming season. The crew has already started to purchase new helmets and shoulder pads but they have a long way to go before their athletes are ready for the season.
Friday’s tournament is a scramble-format affair. Prizes will be awarded throughout the day for accuracy, closest ball to the pin and other categories.
For those hitting errant shots, there are also opportunities to purchase mulligans.
Williams was happy with his first season and enjoyed watching his athletes progress throughout the year. He was also pleased to see their hard work start to pay off at the end of the season.
“I think our athletes have a clear understanding of what we envision for this program and are we are all working hard to move in that direction,” he said.
Williams himself will move in a new direction as he slides over to the high school from the middle school to serve as a new physical education teacher. He said looks forward to have the opportunity to see his kids on a daily basis while at school, although he will miss the Hawks.
“I’m so excited to see what is in store for the ’Toppers this year,” Williams said. “We have a great group coming back and several good young classes coming up.”
