The Los Alamos Hilltopper football team will have a shot at clinching the District 2-4A title tonight.
Los Alamos will take on the Capital Jaguars at 7 p.m. A win for the Hilltoppers tonight at Jaguar Field will seal the 2-4A title for the 2011 season.
Heading into tonight’s game, the Hilltoppers (5-4) are among the hottest teams in Class 4A. They have won four straight and five of their last six to put themselves in a position to clinch the district title. The Hilltoppers’ controlling their own destiny heading into their season finale seemed like a long shot a month ago.
Los Alamos should like its chances against Capital, which has won just one game the entire season. Capital (1-7) managed only a win over Española Valley Oct. 14 in its district opener.
Española Valley, of course, is limping to the finish of the 2011 regular season. The Sundevils managed to field just 23 players last week at Sullivan Field.
In last week’s game, both Arnoldo Ortiz and Xavier Dennison rushed for better than 100 yards, with Ortiz needing just the first quarter to pick up his yardage and Dennison needing just the second quarter.
Los Alamos topped Española Valley 58-0 in that contest, closing it out at halftime.
The Jaguars (1-1) had a chance to make Friday’s game a lot more meaningful last week, but were thumped by the Bernalillo Spartans 53-0 in a 2-4A contest.
The Hilltoppers last won the district title in 2008. The Spartans won in both 2009 and 2010, but to hold onto the crown, they would need the Hilltoppers to lose tonight and would need to win their remaining two contests.
Capital, however, has pulled off upsets against Los Alamos before. In 2007, the Jaguars stunned the Hilltoppers at Jaguar Field in what amounted to the district championship game.
