Football: Artesia tops Aztec for AAAA title, Lovington & Mayfield win

The Artesia Bulldogs added another notch to their record with a big win over the Aztec Tigers in Saturday’s Class AAAA state championship football game.
The Bulldogs knocked off the Tigers 45-34 in the state title game played in Artesia.
The state championship victory was the 27th in the history of Artesia football since 1957.
Artesia won its sixth state title since 2000, when the five-classification system was introduced in New Mexico.
The 27 state titles won by the Bulldogs is nearly twice as many as its next-nearest competitor, Lovington, which kept pace with a victory Saturday in the AAA championship.
Lovington topped Albuquerque Academy 60-45 to win the AAA title and claim its 16th overall championship.
Academy, which very well could’ve won District 2AAAA by virtue of its victories over Los Alamos and Bernalillo during the regular season, advanced to the title game this season for the first time since 1977. Lovington, meanwhile, won its second straight AAA title.
In Class 5A, the Mayfield Trojans also picked up a big victory in a high-scoring game, dropping No. 1 seed Manzano 69-42 in Albuquerque.
With those 69 points scored Saturday, Mayfield — the No. 6 seed heading into the 5A tournament — equaled its point production in the first three games of the playoffs.
