Bandelier National Monument Superintendent Jason Lott announced Friday that the National Park Service (NPS) regional director has signed a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) for Frijoles Mesa Improvements in Bandelier National Monument.
The project is scheduled to begin June 1, and is funded through the American Reinvestment & Recovery Act (ARRA).
“The project improvements approved include facility projects at Juniper Campground and at the housing and maintenance areas within the Frijoles Mesa area,” Lott said. “Highlights of the project include alternatives to control erosion, campsite over-crowding, and circulation problems at Juniper Campground, as well as road and pavement degradation within the housing and maintenance areas on Frijoles Mesa.”
In compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA), the National Park Service prepared an Environmental Assessment (EA) to examine alternatives and environmental impacts associated with the proposed action. The preferred alternative was selected after a careful review of resource and visitor impacts and public comment.
