FLASH FLOOD WATCH IN EFFECT THROUGH LATE TONIGHT...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN ALBUQUERQUE HAS ISSUED A

* FLASH FLOOD WATCH FOR A PORTION OF NORTH AND CENTRAL NEW MEXICO... INCLUDING THE FOLLOWING AREAS... ALBUQUERQUE METRO AREA... CHUSKA MOUNTAINS... FAR NORTHWEST HIGHLANDS... JEMEZ MOUNTAINS... LOWER CHAMA RIVER VALLEY... NORTHWEST HIGHLANDS... NORTHWEST PLATEAU... SAN FRANCISCO RIVER VALLEY... SAN JUAN MOUNTAINS... SANDIA/MANZANO MOUNTAINS... SANTA FE METRO AREA... SOUTHWEST MOUNTAINS... UPPER RIO GRANDE VALLEY... WEST CENTRAL HIGHLANDS... WEST CENTRAL MOUNTAINS AND WEST CENTRAL PLATEAU.

* THROUGH LATE TONIGHT

* AN UPPER LEVEL WAVE MOVING EAST OUT OF ARIZONA WILL INTERACT WITH ABUNDANT MOISTURE OVER NEW MEXICO AND PRODUCE SCATTERED TO WIDESPREAD SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS THROUGH THE LATE EVENING HOURS. STORMS WILL MOVE SLOWLY FROM THE SOUTHWEST TO THE NORTHEAST AND HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO TRAIN REPEATEDLY OVER THE SAME AREAS. RAINFALL RATES MAY REACH OR EXCEED 2 INCHES PER HOUR WITH THE STRONGEST STORMS.

* HEAVY RAIN OVER POOR DRAINAGE AND URBAN AREAS WILL EXACERBATE THE POTENTIAL FOR FLASH FLOODING. THIS INCLUDES LOCATIONS AROUND THE CONTINENTAL DIVIDE AND EAST TOWARD THE RIO GRANDE VALLEY AND PORTIONS OF THE CENTRAL MOUNTAIN CHAIN. RECENT WILDFIRE BURN SCARS WILL SEE ENHANCED RISK FOR FLASH FLOODING.

A FLASH FLOOD WATCH MEANS THAT CONDITIONS MAY DEVELOP THAT LEAD TO FLASH FLOODING. FLASH FLOODING IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION. MONITOR LATER FORECASTS AND BE PREPARED TO TAKE ACTION SHOULD FLASH FLOOD WARNINGS BE ISSUED.
