Fire Department receives new training trailer

The Los Alamos County Fire Department received a new outreach training trailer this morning as part of their efforts to keep children safe. The trailer was delivered to Station 4 by the Los Alamos Golf Course and is set up with a mini kitchen, bedroom and an area with bleachers for children watching safety videos and listening to instruction.“We looked back in our records and found over the last 10 years we had 50,000 people go through our last outreach training trailer,” Fire Marshal Mike Thompson said this morning.LAFD purchased that trailer in 1997 from Mobile Concepts by Scotty out of Mount Pleasant, Pa., he said. They traded it back to that same company and purchased the new trailer for $60,000.Each year, the Los Alamos Public Schools rotate classes that go through the trailer and learn fire safety and prevention. The kitchen has a stove and members of the LAFD Outreach Training Team use it to demonstrate tips to avoid getting burned.The trailer fills up with smoke and trainers show the kids how to test for fire on the other side of doors, which heat up. When the door is hot, the instructors help the kids evacuate out of a window using a ladder.
